Just before Christmas, Welsh star Duffy stopped by the Last.fm Discover studio to treat us to an early gift, performing tracks from her new album, Endlessly.

With Duffy’s second release still paying homage to the vintage sounds of the 1960s and beyond, Last.fm Trends takes a look at her success so far, and at the other soulful sirens that have been embracing the retro sounds of years gone by.

With her teased blonde beehive and smart ’60s style, Duffy could easily have just stepped straight off an old record cover. And her music matches her love for this particular era; her 2008 debut Rockferry rang out with classic soul-pop songs and earned her three BRIT Awards and a Grammy.

Her new release Endlessly still carries the assurance of a record older than its years, and it looks as though the tracks Duffy performed for Last.fm Discover are fast becoming fan favorites. The crazily catchy first single “Well, Well, Well” has reached 134,756 plays since October, and “Don’t Forsake Me” has collected 34,039 scrobbles, with 10,513 individual listeners.

However, she’s still got a long way to go to match her debut, which has reached 9,573,802 plays. Duffy’s first hit single “Mercy” leads the pack with a huge 2,674,711 scrobbles, with the track’s popularity increasing every month.

Duffy isn’t the only British songstress to look for inspiration in the crackle of well-worn vinyl. Soul sensation Amy Winehouse’s second release, Back To Black, owed a lot to 1960s pop, jazz and Motown, and it won her five Grammys and enormous critical acclaim, with scrobbles currently sitting at 23,314,959 plays. Fellow Londoner Adele also swept up at the Grammy’s with her debut release 19; the soaring “Chasing Pavements” checks in at 2,211,977 plays.

With her previous release still rising in our charts and Endlessly hot on its heels, it looks as though Duffy will continue to charm Last.fm listeners throughout 2011. To watch her interview and hear more live performances, visit Last.fm Discover.
