[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Katy Perry[/lastfm] sat down with Vanity Fair to discuss how her strict religious upbringing and lack of a childhood made her the woman she is today. Katy also talked about what it’s like being married to comedian Russell Brand.

[photogallerylink id=32052 align=left]Katy Perry describes her career as being like an artichoke because, “People might think that the leaves are tasty and buttered up and delicious, and they don’t even know that there’s something magical hidden at the base of it. There’s a whole other side [of me] that people didn’t know existed.”

Perry groew up in a pious, God-fearing family. Listening to CDs, birth control, and even uttering phrases like “Deviled eggs” or “Devil’s Food Cake” would land the star in trouble with her evangelical-minister parents. Unless it was titled “The Bible,” reading books was also forbidden in the household.

As Perry describes her faith now, “I come from a very non-accepting family, but I’m very accepting. I have always been the kid who’s asked ‘Why?’ In my faith, you’re just supposed to have faith. But I was always like…why? At this point, I’m just kind of a drifter. I’m open to possibility…. My sponge is so big and wide and I’m soaking everything up and my mind has been radically expanded. Just being around different cultures and people and their opinions and perspectives. Just looking into the sky.”

One thing that has provided her with some stability in life is her marriage with Russell Brand, in which she says there is “never a dull moment.” Brand, a former sex addict, has been nothing but a good husband to Katy in her eyes because he has, “Never lied to me once. I trust him; there’s just a level of trust that we’ve built up.”

But what about the famed Twitpic Russell Brand sent out that featured her without makeup? Did that do anything to affect their trust level?

In fact, she found it to be quite humorous, “We were just messing around. I didn’t really care. I mean, when I go to rehearsals I look like that. I’m every woman. It takes a village to make me who I am. You don’t have to wake up looking like, you know, Gisele.”

For Katy, it’s gonna take more than a Twitpic to derail her marriage, which she thinks the media is all too good at. When asked about maintaining the privacy of her marriage, Perry said, “The press is just not your friend when it comes to marriage.” Privacy is something that Perry & Brand value very highly, which is why they chose not to sell their wedding pictures even though they were offered millions.

Katy says she is never content. “I don’t take anything for granted. There are 500 other girls right behind me. And I know that, because I was one of them. I wouldn’t be working at this pace now if I didn’t truly know that fame is fleeting. Sometimes I can be distracted by the glamour and the fabulousness. But my husband always reminds me to keep the core intact. I just think I have to appreciate every day, every opportunity, work hard, and continue to evolve as an artist. I already know my future evolution, where I’m going to go.”

Although Perry has left her religious upbringing behind, she would like to go to a sort-of heaven one day. After she dies she wants to be launched over the Santa Barbara coast in a Firework a fitting ending to this California Gurl’s Teenage Dream.
