So we went to see X-Men First Class this weekend and were treated to the new trailer for one of the HOTTEST movies coming out this Christmas– David Fincher’s big-budget remake of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo!  Based on the first book of the “Millenium” trilogy by Swedish author Stieg Larsson, this new film stars Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara, and based on this teaser trailer it looks all kinds of awesome!  Check out the video and you’ll be counting down the days ’til Christmas, too!

See, incredible trailer, right?  The visuals, the excellent sense of pacing, and that killer music taking the place of all dialogue– but it got us to thinking, where did that song come from?

OK, we’re not rubes and neither are you– the song itself is obviously “Immigrant Song,” the classic 1970 hit from [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Led Zeppelin[/lastfm].  Zep didn’t do this new version, though, with all the synths and kinda sleazy vocals. So to whom does the credit go?…

>> NEXT: Who Made the New “Immigrant Song”?

The voice on this trailer belongs to Karen O, lead singer of the punk band [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The Yeah Yeah Yeahs[/lastfm].  **FUN FACT TIME– Karen has previously provided the music for the film Where The Wild Things Are, and was the long-time girlfriend of that film’s director Spike Jonze.

The song in the trailer was recorded by recent Academy Award-winner Trent Reznor (y’know, the guy from [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Nine Inch Nails[/lastfm]), who has been tapped to do the score for Dragon Tattoo**FUN FACT TIME #2– Reznor and Fincher previously collaborated on Fincher’s previous movie, The Social Network, and Reznor once popped up onscreen spoofing actor Skeet Ulrich in Scream 2.  Also, The Social Network really should have won the Best Picture Oscar.

News that Reznor will again provide a score worthy of Fincher’s typically excellent films just adds to the promise of Dragon Tattoo.  And speaking of The Social Network, Fincher’s latest teaser trailer follows a suspiciously similar formula from his previous film…

Just like the Dragon Tattoo trailer, the first teaser for Fincher’s “Facebook movie” featured a bunch of quick, compelling shots from the movie driven by another offbeat cover of a popular song.

In this case, the song is “Creep,” one of the earliest singles by British rock band [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Radiohead[/lastfm], only this cover discards the guitars and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Thom Yorke[/lastfm]’s voice for a mostly-accapella chorus, provided by Beligian chior group Scala & Kolacny Brothers.

David Fincher is no slouch when it comes to making great trailers using the perfect musical cues.  He perfected the art of telling a story in two minutes at the beginning of his career, when he directed some of the best music videos of all time, for artists like Madonna, Aerosmith and more!  You didn’t know that, did you?  Check out some of Fincher’s best music videos!

He also directed [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Aerosmith[/lastfm]’s classic video for “Janie’s Got A Gun”…

…and he helmed [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The Rolling Stones[/lastfm]’ “Love Is Strong”…

>> NEXT: Fincher’s video for Paula Abdul… and some 80’s Pop Icons… Who Were They?

Not impressed yet?  The director of Benjamin Button and Fight Club also worked on [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Paula Abdul[/lastfm]’s hit “Straight Up”…

…as well as [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]George Michael[/lastfm]’s “Freedom ’90″…

…Fincher even directed a 1985 tour documentary for [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Rick Springfield[/lastfm]!  Maybe Rick can get a cameo in Dragon Tattoo :)… but if he does, now you’ll know where Fincher got the idea!
