After all the hinting and rumors of a possibility that [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Paul McCartney[/lastfm] would somehow be involved with the 2012 Olympic games in his hometown of London, the former Beatle officially confirmed to the London Olympic game organizers that he will in fact play at the opening ceremony!

McCartney told the 2012 London Olympic game organizers that he would perform at one of the most-watched events around the world during the opening ceremony on July 27th of next year.

Previously, organizers were trying to reunite both McCartney and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Ringo Starr[/lastfm] for a performance at the games, but Starr is already booked on a U.S. tour at the time. No word yet on which songs McCartney will perform, but it’s at least confirmed he’s the headlining act.

Other high-profile musicians hailing from London were also in the running for the world-wide gig, but have turned down the offer. Londoners including the [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Rolling Stones[/lastfm] and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Robert Plant[/lastfm] both turned down appearing at the games in 2012.

“But of all the people you would want, McCartney is number one. He is the ultimate showman and guaranteed to get the Olympics off to a great start,” says an industry source.

We’ll see him at the games!
