By Christine Lee

In memory of Dick Clark’s passing, here’s an interview from the Craig and Company archives, as Christine talks to Dick back in December 1998.

“Why am I still doing this?!” Dick joked. “I’ll be out there freezing my buns off and you’ll be somewhere warm and cozy!”

Even back in ’98, Mr. Clark had been ringing in the New Year for 27 years. It’s great to hear the list of “top acts” performing at the ’98 New Year’s Rockin Eve, including Backstreet Boys, Chicago, Barenaked Ladies, Monica… and the excitement in Dick’s voice as he talks about the new ball being created this year, braving the cold in Times Square and his rock and roll memorbilia collection reminds us all just how dedicated he was to his annual tradition.

Many people were unaware that Dick was also an avid collector. “I have 4,000 pieces of rock and roll memorabilia. I have one of Michael Jackson’s beaded gloves he dropped at the office one day.”

Dick’s was a  role model for generations of people.  “I’m the luckiest guy you’ll ever meet in your life. This is my 51st year and I’m still employed and happy and loving every minute of it. I got fortunate as a kid and realized that one day people wouldn’t hire me so I started doing things behind the scenes.”

“I can remember a lot of bad times and I can remember people who have helped you get through them. When you’ve been around as long as I have there’s more than a few of those!”

Dick Clark Production is responsible for Academy of Country Music Awards, New Years Rockin Eve, American Music Awards, Golden Globes, Soap Opera Digest Awards… Or, “Awards R Us!” he puts it.

This will be a strange New Year’s Eve without him.
