What’s portrayed on live television isn’t always 100% accurate. When American Idol’s Colton Dixon stopped by CBS Local we had to ask him what fans of the show would be shocked to learn.

The season 11 contestant revealed that being on the show and a part of the American Idol Live Tour is a lot more arduous than he expected.

“I think people would be surprised to know how much work goes into the whole thing,” he confessed. “We’re not on a tour bus all day before the show’s on tour. I think there are four or five meet and greets per show, which is insane. We love meeting the fans, don’t get me wrong. But, by the time that last meet & greet rolled up we had to be conscious of smiling. We were exhausted.”

He stressed that there’s a lot of work that goes into the show.

“I know I didn’t realize it before I was on the show. I had watched since Season 1. I figured, ‘Oh man, it looks so glamorous. They’re in a mansion!’ Which, we sleep in a mansion, that’s about it,” he said. “Good luck to next year’s contestants, that’s all I’m going to say.”

As with reality TV, sometimes the cameras don’t portray the person in the best light. Colton said this wasn’t the case for him.

“I think they stuck to who I was pretty well,” he said. “There’s always going to be editing to create drama. Besides the initial audition with my sister and I, that was dramatized a little bit. A lot bit. But, it really happened and it was legit. So, it got the watchers latched onto our story which I think helped in the long run. It’s all for a reason, any press is good press.”

His advice to future contestants?

“You just have to know that going in and if something doesn’t go your way you just gotta run with it, roll with the punches and give your best.”
