Mumford & Sons Talk Stopover Shows And Road To Red Rocks

Since their formation in 2007, Mumford & Sons have become international superstars – and the premiere act in today’s indie/folk rock scene.  The band is nominated for six GRAMMY’s at Sunday’s ceremony, including “Album of the Year” for their most recent effort, Babel. Gina J sat down with the group before their exclusive performance at 96.5 TIC’s Acoustic Café.

When not selling out arenas or headlining festivals, the West London natives professed their love for playing in intimate settings, as they did for us tonight at the Wilbur Theater in Boston.  In addition, last year the band started their Gentlemen of the Road series – special stopover shows in small towns across the world not normally visited by headlining acts.

“Last year’s stopover series took us across pretty amazing places around the United States,” lead vocalist Marcus Mumford told Gina. “We [also] did one in Ireland, one in England, and one in Australia… We had so much fun with it that we thought we would do it again.”

The band recently announced that the 2013 stopover shows will hit Troy, OH; Guthrie, OK;  St Augustine, FL; as well as Simcoe, Ontario and Lewes in the UK.  “We just have found a handful of more places we want to go and celebrate,” continued Marcus, who described last year’s shows as a success. “There was a great element of collaborative spirit between the small towns and a bunch of international touring bands coming in. It didn’t really feel so much like we were sticking all of our stuff on top of the town, it was more like we were going in and infusing everything with everyone.”

Mumford & Sons: The Road to Red Rocks premieres this week on Showtime.  The film, which is also available on DVD, documents last year’s Gentlemen of the Road Stopovers.

“We did two nights at Red Rocks last year at the end of [the] long tour,” explained Ben Lovett.  “It was like a five or six week tour with the stopovers, and there were two guys, Fred and Nick, who just documented it. We are quite proud of it.”

Be sure to check out Mumford & Sons at the 55th annual Grammy Awards live from Los Angeles on CBS this Sunday!
