Rita Wilson Describes Her Debut Solo Album AM/FM

Actress Rita Wilson has a new solo record called AM/FM, and she talked all about it backstage at the GRAMMYs with Damon and Gina.

“It’s called ‘AM/ FM.’  It came out in May of 2012, and it’s a collection of songs from the 60s and 70s,” she explained of her first venture into solo music.  The concept is quite personal for Wilson, as each song she covers was one of the tunes she remembered hearing on the radio in the back seat of her parents’ car as they drove around Southern California when she was a child.

“I loved those songs from the 60s because they were romantic and innocent and sweet,” she recalled.  “By the time the 70s rolled around and I was driving, now I had control of the dial… that was as if the people of the 60s had that beautiful fantasy all of a sudden hit the reality of heartbreak.”

There is one original song by Wilson amidst the cover songs, the iTunes bonus track called “Every Perfect Picture,” written by Patti Scialfa from the E-Street Band.  She loved the song when she heard it, and started performing it at her live shows this Summer.

Wilson’s favorite songs on the album are “Angel in the Morning,” featuring Sheryl Crow on harmony, “All I have to Do Is Dream” with Chris Cornell, or “Love Has No Pride” with Faith Hill.  Those are just a few of the impressive team of singers Wilson worked with on the album, which was a great experience for the actress/ producer. “That’s the thing about the music community,” she recalled.  “It’s so welcoming… it’s really about making music.”
