Rod Stewart thought he would never write another song again. But one day last year, the floodgates opened. Before Stewart knew it he had enough material for his first full album of originals in over 20 years.
In a new video, Stewart explains that he’s still not quite sure what inspired him to write again, but he does remember what caused him stop.
“A pretty well known executive at a well known record label, really put the nail in the coffin for my songwriting ten, eleven years ago,“ he said. “I had no confidence in my songwriting.”
With his latest album, Time, out May 7, Stewart stopped caring what other people thought and wrote from the heart. His goal was to be completely honest with himself. “That’s the key ingredient,” he said. “ But sometimes it’s very difficult.”
One song, that was tough for him to write was “It’s Over,” which is all about divorce, something Stewart said he unfortunately knows too much about, noting the “horrible, painful effects your children” endure.
The rest of the album though is about the joys of life. “Bloody happy music,” Stewart said. “Makes you smile.”
On “She Makes Me Happy” he talks about the perfect woman, while “Beautiful Morning”– his two young sons’ favorite song–tells the story of finding that perfect escape.
“Get away somewhere quiet,” he said. “Where you can forget about work and the troubles of the week and make love and get drunk and all fall down.”
Stewart added with a smile, “Which are some of the lyrics.”
