Phillip Phillips Looks Back On One Full Year Of Fame

Since being titled American Idol Season 11 champion a year ago, Phillip Phillips has established himself as one of the show’s most successful artists to date.  His debut album, The World from the Side of the Moon, is about to cross one million copies in sales, and his first two singles, “Home,” and “Gone, Gone, Gone,” are already both certified Platinum by the RIAA.

“[American Idol] was a lot more than I thought it was going to be,” said Phillips when he called Craig & Company. “You learn a lot in a very short time and at a very fast pace. There is a lot you have to take in, but it’s been good. I’ve had a lot of great people around me, and I have been trying to make the right decisions for myself.”

Going from working at his family’s pawn shop in Georgia to performing to packed arenas overnight is quite the transition— and while some have been known to come unhinged by newfound fame, Phillips has been handling it professionally.

“Some people learn things later on in life, and some people learn things quicker,” he said. “I am not going to judge anyone else’s life because everyone goes through different things.”

To top off a stellar 2013, Phillips has hit the road with some big name acts—spending the first half of the year with Matchbox 20, and now currently supporting John Mayer on his Born and Raised Tour.  The two will stop in Hartford tomorrow night for a performance at the Comcast Theatre. Phillips played it coy when asked if he would ever like to trade headlining duties with Mayer.

“That would be a little strange for me,” he said. “[John] has been a very nice guy to me, and I don’t want to ruin anything!”

But John Mayer does get the girls–  has Phillip ever hung out with Katy Perry during the tour?

“I wish!” he laughed.
