The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony featured a great number of exciting performances and collaborations, certainly among them Nate Ruess of fun.’s tribute to the late Lou Reed, on which he paired with Beck.

Ruess joined Beck in a capacity he describes to as a “backup singer” alongside longtime Beck band members Jason Falkner and Roger Joseph Manning Jr. Ruess says Beck asked him to perform after the two recorded a song together for Ruess’s forthcoming album Grand Romantic “because he just enjoyed chilling with me, I guess.”

Ruess says the “meta”-ness of the event, along with being in a room full of legends, gave him a thrill that was unlike other music award ceremonies.

“Just being there, sitting at the table with Beck and watching how many people big-upped him the whole time [was cool],” Ruess explains. “To hear [inductee] Bill Withers walk on stage, he was talking about this drummer James Gadson, who I had play on the song that we recorded. Beck had been using him for the last few years also. He’s responsible for all those incredible Bill Withers beats that a lot of hip-hop guys have sampled.

“That Saturday, I was in Cleveland with Beck and Bill Withers is on stage talking about how Beck hangs out with James Gadson and then that Monday Jeff [Bhasker, his producer] was in the studio recording with James for the song that we were doing with Beck. It’s pretty meta.”
