From Pizza to Pad Thai: The Most Popular Food Delivery Items in Each State During Quarantine

Americans have always loved ordering out, but now, with many restaurants closed for dine-in due to the pandemic, takeout and delivery have become even more popular.

With many people choosing not to leave the house due to the coronavirus outbreak, delivery has significantly risen, with Axios reporting 22% of Amercians had food delivered to their home in mid-April, up from 19% the week prior.

Many parents who have been juggling working from home and online schooling have also turned to delivery. Their usage of delivery-based apps increased from 16% to 20% between February and March, CivicScience noted, according to the outlet.

Yelp decided to go a step further and look at what people have been consuming the most in each state during the quarantine.

Data scientist Samuel Hansen compared how often a dish was ordered in each state over others to find "how American taste buds differ from state to state and region to region."

Some of the findings weren't surprising, such as pizza being the overall most popular takeout food in the U.S.

However, other findings were more shocking than others. Take, for example, Illinois’ love for thin-crust pizza despite Chicago being famous for its deep dish pizza.

Meanwhile, Washington, Wisconsin, and Maine all wanted pad thai for dinner.

Crawfish was the top choice in Texas.

California and Michigan ordered large quantities of bubble tea.

And everyone in Virginia, North Carolina, and Arizona appears to be feasting on tacos.

Other food orders included sushi in Nebraska, hot wings in Utah, and green chile cheeseburgers in New Mexico.

Not only have local restaurants been benefitting from the increased delivery orders, but so have services like DoorDash, GrubHub and Uber Eats.

“The big opportunity we thought Eats was just got bigger,” Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said, noting that while Uber rides may be down, deliveries are significantly up.
